Initial Phone Consultation

The purpose of the initial consultation is to see if we would be a good fit for each other. There is no charge for this consultation.

Once you contact me (via email or website form), I will email you to coordinate a time that works for me to give you a call.

Phone consultations last fifteen to thirty minutes. We will discuss your goals for therapy and whether climbing psychotherapy would be a good fit for you to achieve those goals.

If you have previously had therapy, I would like to hear what has and hasn't worked for you in the past. This is also your chance to ask me any questions you might have about my background and approach.

At the end of the call, if we both agree that this would be a good fit, we can schedule our first climbing psychotherapy session.

Climbing Psychotherapy Session

Climbing psychotherapy takes place at the Portland Rock Gym. I will meet you in the front lobby at your scheduled appointment time and we will get you checked in and fitted with gear as needed (gear rental is included in session rates).

We will begin the session with a check-in in the PRG instructional room. The check-in includes both a verbal check-in and a mindfulness exercise. Your session plan will be based on the information we touch on during your check-in, and we will choose climbing and therapeutic exercises based on your needs for that day.

Beginning climbers are welcome! Many of my clients have never climbed before, and all sessions are customized based on the individual and what would be most beneficial for them at the time of the session.

During each session, we will work on practicing skills that will be useful for the real-life challenges you identified in the check-in.

We will gently practice compassionate self-awareness, turning inward while extending outward. This is a practice that can be strengthened through climbing and then applied in every area of your life.

After each climbing exercise, we will discuss the experience - what you felt, how each skill practice went, and how you might take this skill off the wall and apply it moment by moment in your daily life. You are the authority of your own experience, and sessions will be continuously guided by what you are experiencing and what is and isn't serving you.
